The market in Masaya houses 90% of the art produced in Nicaragua, and many talented artists showcase their impressive wares in this market. This trade in handicrafts, together with coffee, are the most important industries in the region.

Nicaraguan folklore also takes center stage every Thursday in Masaya, where traditional dress, dance and food all form part of the colorful mosaic that is Nicaraguan culture.

If you are interested in traditional food, art and folklore, you should also visit the following villages: Nindiri, Catarina, Diria, Masatepe and Diriomo, known as "Los Pueblos Blancos" (The White Towns).

Pueblos Blancos (White Towns):

Whitewashed walls and colorful doors, together with a very palpable living tradition, are all part of the rugged charm of Los Pueblos Blancos , or The White Towns. The Chorotega and Mangue tribes that have inhabited the region since colonial times have ensured that these traditions live on.

San Juan de Oriente is famous for its marvelous ceramics, and Catarina for its spectacular scenic overlook. At the overlook, a spectacular vista opens up, and you can see the shimmering sapphire of the Lagoon of Apoyo, expansive Lake Nicaragua, and in the distance the Spanish tile-clad rooftops in Granada.

Dioriomo produces the popular Cajeta de Leche (similar to fudge) and Diria is well known for its legends about witches. Other "White Towns" are Niquinohomo, Nandasmo and Masatepe. In Jinotepe, San Marcos and Diaramba you can visit the famous Festival Gueguense, which takes place January 19th and 20 th .
