Lankester Botanical Garden



Internationally recognized for its outstanding collections of epiphytes (air plants), the Jardín Botánico Lankester was established in 1973 as a center for display, education, conservation and reearch of tropical plants, with an emphasis on ordchids.

In its 27 acres of in-and outdoord gardnes, almost 3000 species of living plants are displayed,including bomeliads, aroids, heliconias, gingers, musaceae (banana family), cacti, ferns, bamboos, palms and a variety of tropical trees.

Besides its renowned orchid collections, the Jardín Botánico Lankester hosts other important plant collections, patches of natural secondary tropical premontane forest, a butterfly garden and facilities intended for botanical research.

Scientific activivties at the Garden include: plant exploration, systematic studies and production of regional floras, researches in ecology and pollination biology of ordchids, surveys of population dynamic of threatened species, and micropropagation studies to improve germinability of orchids seeds, both symbiotically and asymbiotically. Scientists active at the Garden frequently publish articles in internationally reconized journals and offer classes to the community on topics related to plant research and conservation.

The Garden enjoys an average daily temperature of 18-24 oC dorpping to a cool 15-18 oC at night. It receives an average annual rainfall of 1000-1300 mm.

How to ge there?
By bus: take the San José - Paraíso rute (bus station is on " Terminal La Trinidad" , located 300 west to Plaza Víquez, on San José) or San José -Cartago rute (south side to Los Padres Capuchinos churc, in Cartago)
The Garden is 2 km before Paraíso, in front of Casa Vieja Restaurant.

Opens daily, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. .

Admmision
$5 adulto, $3.5 children and students

Recommendations
Don't pick up flowers, sleaves or identification tarjets. Use the trails, walk with care and see the signs. Respect the schedule and help to the clean.

Don'ts
Do not go in drunk, do not take alcohol to the park, do not take animals with you, do not damage plants or any other natural resource from the wild, do not go to limited zones
