Bike Tour Descriptions
ARENAL LAKE TO EL CASTILLO - Half Day Mountain Bike Tour
Distance: 13 to 26 km / 8 to 16 miles
Altitude gain: 85 mts /280 ft
Terrain: Secondary road of gravel/sand with a few rocky spots. Flat with a few short hills
Difficulty: Beginner – Intermediate
Two daily departures: 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. from La Fortuna
Returns: 12 noon or 5 p.m.

This ride takes us on an old road connecting Arenal Dam with the main entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park. From there we go towards the village of El Castillo, biking on a quiet lane surrounded by dense forest and a few cattle farms. Along the ride we often see howling monkeys, coatis, and many birds like toucans, egrets and king fishers. We’ll stop for a picnic on the shore of Lake Arenal where it’s possible to swim. The volcano is visible during most of the ride and we can often hear its activity while we bike.
DON CARLOS ORGANIC FARM TRAIL
Half Day - Traffic Free Bike Tour for Families
Distance: 12 to 18 km / 7.5 to 11 miles
Altitude gain: 20 m /65 ft
Terrain: Flat. 50% rural gravel road and 50% traffic free double and single track
Difficulty: Beginner. Ideal for children.
Two daily departures: 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. from La Fortuna
Returns: 12 noon or 5 p.m.

Easy family tour on a purposely built double and easy single track trail through an organic cattle farm. Ride across pasture lands and patches of forest. Cross a shallow stream and learn the basic skills of mountain biking. The ride will finish at the “lechería” where we can milk a cow, witness the cheese and butter making and learn about the daily operation of the farm. Includes a picnic with organic produce from the farm: cheese, yogurt and fresh fruit.
MOUNTAIN BIKE AT LAKE ARENAL – FULL DAY TOUR
Distance: 30 to 40 km / 18.6 to 25 miles
Altitude gain: 665 m / 2181 ft
Terrain: dirt and gravel roads with some muddy and rocky sections
Difficulty: Intermediate
This is an out and back ride starting by Arenal Volcano National Park. We’ll bike on the gravel road along the south shore of Lake Arenal, famous for the abundant wildlife and stunning scenery. After crossing the Caño Negro River we’ll ride on the abandoned road around the lake crossing a few streams and passing by small family farms and areas of protected forest. On the way back we’ll stop in the village of El Castillo for a delicious “casado” lunch. After lunch we have the option of riding the old dirt road all the way back to Arenal Dam.

ROAD BIKE AROUND LAKE ARENAL – Paved Road Bike Tour
Distance: 18 km to 35 km / 11 to 22 miles
Altitude gain: 265 m / 870 ft
Terrain: Rolling hills. Paved road with a few short sections of gravel
Difficulty: Beginner - Intermediate
Departure: 8 a.m. from La Fortuna Returns: 2 – 3 p.m.

Also includes: picnic stop and restaurant lunch
We’ll bike across Arenal Dam and bike on the road along the north side of Arenal Lake. This road has very little traffic and offers the most relaxing ride through tropical forest, home of monkeys and birds. We enjoy great views of the lake as well as a chance to experience the rural life in this remote part of Costa Rica. We’ll offer a picnic stop and lunch will be served at a restaurant at the end. We’ll return to our hotels crossing the lake by boat and enjoying imposing views of Arenal Volcano.
