What The Pros Say

Jon & Jeannie Michaels
JUNE 30TH, 2005

Imagine having a best friend living in Costa Rica and you have not seen each other for some time. You call him up and he is exited that you are coming and wants to show you around and he knows everything and everyone so you receive the “Cool” treatment, that is what my wife and I experienced on our honeymoon.

What an amazing and wonderful time my new wife and I had in Costa Rica. I was searching the internet for information and by chance happened on Costa Rica Dive. I called and connected with a woman named Bridget who was answering calls for Rolando Arburola. It seems Rolando has a company that specializes in a Costa Rica package / adventure.

You can never tell about the internet so I took the information and said goodbye. Later on, Bridget called me back with some diving information she received regarding prices. Bridget started asking about my plans and I told her that I was going on my honeymoon and this was going to be the fist time in Costa Rica. Bridget was raving on and on about this guy Rolando. She said that he was the guide for National Geographic, The Lifetime Channel and was a wonderful person. I should call him when I get to Costa Rica. We had a few more talks and again she kept bringing up Rolando. I decided that I would call Rolando when I got to Costa Rica and now that the adventure is over, it was the best thing I ever did.

Rolando and I spoke on the phone and he asked me what my wife and I wanted to do while in Costa Rica. I replied that we wanted to go on a “Zip Line” (don’t ask me to explain it…just trust me and mark it down as a must do). I then told him that we wanted to river raft, see the volcano, go hiking to water falls and finally dive.

He said no worries and called me back. After agreeing on a price, Rolando picked me and my wife up in a private air condition van, and we were off. For the first two hours we drove to the rain forest for a zip line experience. Rolando talked of the Country and it’s history. He pointed out all the trees and towns and gave us the royal treatment. He had his assistant David who did all the driving and was amazingly safe and prompt. After the Zip line, we headed to the hot springs. Talk about relaxing, this place is tucked way back in the forest, and had it not been for Rolando, we would have never known about it. You see it is by invitation only and Rolando is invited to bring his guest. There were
several pools to relax in and a shower and bar for drinks and changing.

ARENAL VOLCANO

After that. We headed up to Arenal Volcano; the most active volcano in Central America. This is something to see. As you get closer to the volcano, you are taken by its size and its awe. There are so many clouds in the air that it’s sometimes difficult to see the top of the cone. Well, not today… it was clear as day and you could see the fume spiraling into the air. We headed up the winding roads till we got to the Arenal Observatory. We turned up and made our way to this spectacular restaurant and hotel. There Rolando had a suite for Jeannie and I and dinner reserved. There I was eating a wonderful dinner watching the lava flow from this Volcano. After dinner, Jeannie and retired to our sweet with a breath taking view of the lava and volcano.

The next morning, we woke up early for a delicious buffet breakfast and headed to Fortuna Falls. Rolando said, We must be the fist ones there or it won’t be as fun. We arrive and there is no one there. The three of us start this exciting hike…(serious enough to watch every step down and back up again) and when we arrived at the falls, it was again spectacular. The water was so turquoise and we jumped in and starting swimming to another side of the falls where we could get out and walk to the inside of the falls. There we were rejuvenated and telling each other that this is what Living is all about. We climbed out of the water and by that time all the other tour operators started showing up and we were out of there. We were there all by ourselves and that is the way to see this place.

After that, we got back into the van and headed out for our next adventure; White Water Rafting. When we arrived at our destination, Waiting was a new six person raft two personal guides and all the equipment. The river was a class two and three and for two hours we went through a gauntlet of Monkeys, toucans, all kinds of birds, cattle crossings, and sounds never heard on any interstate in the US . It was again, amazing. My wife and I felt very safe with the guide and the guide assistant that followed the raft in the event someone fell out. That never happened but it was nice to know he was there.

From there, we showered and it was time for a late lunch; another off the beaten path that with out Rolando, we would have never known. You won't find these cool places in just any tour; for that I promise.

We arrived back at the hotel, said goodnight, had a good night sleep and got up early for a morning boat ride to Catalina Island . As Jeannie and I made our way to the beach, there was Rolando waiting with a very fast cruse boat two dive guides and the captain. We boarded the boat and in 15 minutes we hit the water and were diving. How exciting it was to be on the boat just us, and having the time of our lives.

After the dives, Rolando made sure our equipment was cleaned and returned to our hotel.

I again want to preface. This tour was for the adventurer that wanted the best without having to hang with 30 other tourist, waiting in line to get a turn to see something everyone else has seen a million times. Rolando quoted me a price and I want to say this. If you are looking for a standard “run of the mill' experience in Costa Rica where you hang with a bunch of other travelers, go to the places every one else goes to and get a quick in and out experience for your money and time, then Rolando is not your man. Don't call him. However, If you want a once in a life time adventure to places that represent the real Costa Rica with real people, places off the beaten path, and all the wild, totally safe and secure, then Rolando is the man.

It may cost a few (and that is all…a few) more dollars then the standard tour but the memories will be worth millions.
