Itinerary
DAY ONE
SAN JOSE (Arrival)
Costa Rica Dive representative will welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel.
DAY TWO
PACUARE RIVER (Rafting)
The first day begins with a scenic drive along the foothills of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes to the “put in” on the Pacuare River. We will run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III-IV rapids while exploring this magnificent river valley. This afternoon we arrive at our comfortable riverside camp, “El Nido del Tigre.” Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river. (B,L,D)
DAY THREE
3 PACUARE RIVER (Rafting)
Today the Pacuare takes us through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. Along the way we take time out to do a side hike to some waterfalls and have lunch on the shore. “Taking out” near the town of Siquirres, we drive up into the Talamanca mountain range to Genesis II Cloud Forest Reserve. (B,L,D).
DAY FOUR
CLOUD FOREST/SANTA MARIA DE DOTA (Hiking, Canopy, Biking)
At an altitude of over 7500 feet we hike the trails of the Reserve. Along the way we stop for a rope and harness to do an exciting canopy tour where you will see and experience the variety of life that exists in the cloud forest. The mountain biking section is a 20 km section of mostly downhill on dirt roads to the coffee growing community of Santa Maria de Dota. (B, L,D)
DAY FIVE
PACIFIC SLOPES TO MANUEL ANTONIO (Biking)
A 60km bike takes us through the sparsely populated and incredibly scenic Pacific slopes. Once out of the hills, we cross the river at Paso Real and push on all the way to the white sand beaches of Manuel Antonio and our hotel for the night. (B,L)
DAY SIX
BEACH DAY!
Free day to enjoy the beach at Manuel Antonio.
DAY SEVEN
7 GOLFO DULCE, OSA PENINSULA (Sea kayaking)
This morning we continue south by van along the Pacific coast to our sea kayaking put-in, Rincon de la Osa, located on the banks of the Golfo Dulce, Osa Peninsula. We spend the afternoon exploring a nearby river estuary. (B, L, D)
DAY EIGHT
GOLFO DULCE, OSA PENINSULA (Sea Kayaking)
The reflection of the rainforest meeting the calm waters of the gulf is a perfect setting for our 15 km sea kayak along this beautiful coastline. There is plenty of time to snorkel, fish, or just enjoy the area. We reach our camp in the afternoon, from where there are several hiking trails, and one that leads to a waterfall where a swim in freshwater is very welcome. (B, L, D)
DAY NINE
GOLFO DULCE, OSA PENINSULA (Sea Kayaking)
Back on the water! An hour into the paddle we reach the mouth of the Esquinas River – here we head up stream to explore this wildlife rich estuary. There is an opportunity to set up ropes for an assisted climb up one of the coconut palms and to snorkel a reef in front of the beach before getting back in the kayaks and making for our camp for the night. (B, L, D)
DAY TEN
CROSSING THE GULF (Sea Kayaking)
An early morning departure allows for a spectacular crossing of the Gulf. The 18km crossing takes 3-4 hours with several stops for pictures and snacks. We arrive in Puerto Jimenez by mid-morning and drive to our cabins in Rincon de la Osa. The afternoon is time to relax before the trek tomorrow. (B, L, D)
DAY ELEVEN
CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK (Trekking)
Trekking across the Osa Peninsula to the Pacific coast is our goal for the next few days. This first day involves a 4-hour hike from the coast on dirt roads going past small family run fincas and into the tropical rainforest of the park and onto the ranger station, Los Patos. Camping tonight is at the ranger station. (B, L, D)
DAY TWELVE
CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK (Trekking)
The Trek to Sirena Ranger Station takes between 5 & 7 hours. The first part of the trail undulates steeply through the hilly forest two or 3 hours before it finally flattens out near swampy Corcovado Lagoon. This area is one of the best places to see wildlife in Costa Rica. The station and our camp for the night is located between Claro and Sirena rivers and has several trails. (B, L, D)
DAY THIRTEEN
CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK (Trekking)
We head to the coast and along the beach to Carate. En route we will encounter several challenging rocky headlands and it is common to see Jaguar prints on the beach. If you are extremely lucky you may even get a glimpse of one in the distance. At Carate we transfer to four wheels to Puerto Jimenez for our last night on the peninsula. (B, L, D)
DAY FOURTENN
CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK/SAN JOSE
After a relaxing morning we walk to the landing strip and board a local flight back to San Jose. (B, L)
